Sonny Moore or Skrillex as he well known worldwide is one of the most famous DJs and music producer in the world. He is well versed when it comes to electronic music and he has produced some of the most listened to sounds in recent years.
He is also well received around the world and he has been able to have ticket sell-outs in huge locations around the world.
Not only does he have sold out concerts, Skrillex is a proud owner of three Grammy Awards.
Question is what laptop does a forever busy and always on tour DJ and music producer like Skrillex use when he is on the road or when he is in front of masses of people doing what he does best and that is entertains them with his music prowess?
He was asked that once and he said that he has a MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar.
Let us have an in depth look at the MacBook Pro 13 inch with Touch Bar.
This laptop came out and was the talk of the town with all its magnificent features making it stand out as one of the best laptops out there and well, the most expensive too.
Design and Build
The first thing that stands out with this laptop is that one has the choice of getting it in its classic aluminum color or in a deep space grey color. Fine choices of color for the laptop although many would like to have the Rose Gold choice added to it.
The laptop is made from one single sheet of aluminum chassis which does not bend. The use of the single sheet of aluminum has made it very light coming in at 1.37 kilograms.
If you have ever had problems with carrying space or always wanted to look unassuming when carrying a laptop, then the MacBook Pro’s super thin nature, its 15mm tallness and with the same screen will be quite the thing for you as you are able to fit it inside any space available.
Its design comes with a few key features such as two additional USB 3.1 Type C/Thunderbolt 3 ports which brings it to a sum of four ports on your laptop. It also has the Touch Bar and TouchID module replacing the top keys on the laptop.
The Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro is an OLED touchscreen which takes the use of some function keys and making them quite easy to operate by use of touch.
It is divided into two, the Control Strip allows you to choose four shortcuts like the volume, brightness and Siri or you can extend it throughout the whole strip increasing its function to allowing media playback and keyboard backlight brightness. There is not much to say about the Touch Bar except that it gives you back the use of the keys removed only that this time, it will be in the form of touch.
When using photos, the Touch Bar takes you to a scrolling view of the photos which allows you to browse through them same as you would when using your iPhone. If your fingers are as stubby as mine, then this feature will be a pain in the bum as the strip will feel narrow and I found myself thinking that it would be awesome if they increased the Touch Bar’s height.
The Touch Bar works well with the following:
- Microsoft Office
- Adobe Photoshop
- Da Vinci Resolve
- Affinity Designer and Photo
There are also apps that are compatible with the touch screen which is a lot of fun. Better yet, the Touch ID sensor makes it easy for you to log on into Apple Pay and just pay for whatever it is you are purchasing.
Keyboard and Touchpad
It still has the same Butterfly technology found in the 12 inch MacBook with a few enhancements. It has shallow travel, which can be a little difficult to use for some but one gets used to it fairly fast.
Its touchpad is quite big and operates very smoothly on every tap, swipe and gesture on it. it contains Force Touch Technology and also pressure sensitive which allows you to long-press for a different command on the screen.
This laptop has a 13.3 inch screen which has a pixel Retina of 2,560×1,600 pixel display. Its performance has improved although it still has the same resolution as its 2015 predecessor.
Talking about the screen brightness, it tops at 550nits which is pretty unique for a laptop. Its color gamut is 99.9% and the cinema gamut is 98.3% making it the best laptop for professionals whose work relies on their final product looking as it would in real life.
Accessories – Speakers, Webcam and Microphone
Still breaking records, the MacBook Pro 13’s speaker are out of this world. They are the best speakers on a laptop as they are loud, with a lot of bass and stereo separation hence why the likes of Skrillex use it for their music production.
If you are using its microphone, it will cancel out any background noises, even if you are sitting in a noisy café or office. The one listening to you will receive clear voices with little or no hissing or echo thanks to the extra mic added by Mac to elevate quality.
The webcam is a little disappointing as it is one aspect of its laptops that has not changed in a while. It comes with a standard 720p webcam which is quite okay when you are just having video chats and conferences.
It is obvious that the MacBook Pro 13 should have great improvements when it comes to its performance abilities. It comes with a studier dual-core 2.9GHz Core i5-6267U which can boost up to 3.1GHz.
It has a powerful Intel Iris Graphics 550 which is good when it comes to great video effects. It is not advisable to play some games on the MacBook Pro but it does no harm, especially if you do not mind it.
When you purchase the laptop, it comes with a standard issue 8GB of 2,133MHz Ram. If you will be editing a lot of videos and have the money, get yourself a 16GB for yourself. It should be stressed that after purchasing your laptop, it will be a tad difficult to upgrade your Ram, so consider your needs beforehand and decide how much you will require.
It comes with a space of 256GB and if you have the extra bucks, you can get the 512 GB laptop or the 1TB one.
Ah yes, the ever chip in the shoulder of so many powerful laptops is its battery life. This laptop has a smaller unit compared to its base model and it does not look good for it. When fully charged and in half brightness, the laptop was able to go a solid seven hours with no charge.
Its battery indicator was not always accurate.
Below are some of the overall features of the MacBook Pro 13 with a Touch Bar:
- 8GB 2,133MHz LPDDR3 memory
- 9-3.1 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5-6267U
- Intel Iris Graphics 550
- 2,560×1,440-pixel Retina display
- 4 Thunderbolt 3/USB Type C ports
- 5mm headset jack
- 256GB PCle SSD
- 11 ac Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth 4.2
- 15mm in thickness

The Final Verdict
With its added features, one will understand why it was priced as it was. Its performance is one of the best in a laptop and the extra ports are advantageous. It has great build, screen, keyboard and touchpad making it one of the best laptops if not the best laptop in the world.
Its battery life might be of concern to many users but if you do not mind a seven-hour working time in half brightness, then you will not have sleepless nights about the battery life.
Below are some of the advantages and disadvantages of the MacBook Pro 13 inch with Touch Bar:
- Very good design and build
- A lot of Thunderbolt ports
- Very good quality screen
- Outstanding performance on a laptop
- No adapters
- Depending on the workload, battery life might vary
Below are some comments from users of the MacBook Pro 13 inch with Touch Bar:
1.) The space gray color, in my opinion, looks more attractive and appealing. I own the 2012 MacBook pro with retina and in terms of color, the space gray one takes the trophy.
2.) The retina display is a lot brighter and sharp.
3.) Very fast when using final cut pro or Photoshop.
4.) You can’t even notice there is a fan on this laptop. On my 2012 MacBook Pro, I constantly hear the fan when rendering in final cut pro but not on this one!
5.) Lighter and smaller than the previous generation. Although not by much, you can feel the difference.
6.) The trackpad is, as Donald Trump would say, “Huge!” When I went back to work on my 2012 MacBook pro, I missed having the humongous trackpad in front of me. It is a nice to have the extra space to scroll and click.
1.) Touch ID is limited: When you turn on the computer for the first time, you need to input your password, you are not allowed to use your finger to login. I have yet to see a program that takes advantage of the touch id. You cannot even use touch ID at the apple store on the mac, you must input your password manually.
2.) The 15” – 512gb is expensive! I couldn’t believe apple would sell a $2400 computer with 256gb in 2016! I honestly recommend you get at least 512gb of memory. With all the new programs coming out, music and video, your hard drive will get full fast. Not to mention that if you plan to install windows 10 (only windows version that you can install) with boot camp, you will need the additional hard drive space…
3.) You must buy dongles for almost any device you own (to charge your phone, your current external hard drives, printer, etc.).
4.) No more illuminated logo on the back of the screen. Not a big thing to me but I know some people loved that.
Overall: If you already own a 2012 MacBook Pro or newer, it will probably be a waste of money to upgrade to this one. Unless you are an apple fanboy, like me, and just need to have the newest apple product. Otherwise, stay with your MacBook Pro, which can probably do 90% of the same things this one can. If it is your first time buying a mac and you will be working on photo or video editing software, this is the computer for you! For casual web browsing and school work, go with a much cheaper 13” MacBook pro or the 12” MacBook. The touch bar is a nice feature but it does not add much to the user experience (I wish they would have given me more Gigabyte’s instead).” By Jose Ortiz
